About Pediatric Dentistry
Every parent strives to give their children a good start in life, and instilling good oral habits plays a significant part in that. The Center for Disease Control estimates that approximately 40% of preschool-age children have at least some level of tooth decay, which can cause not only pain and discomfort but also difficulties with chewing and speech development. Therefore, it is important that parents not only teach their children proper dental hygiene at home but that they also seek out preventative care from a dentist who is specially trained to care for children.
Dental Care for Children of All Ages
Your dentist will administer dental treatments and services that are specifically geared towards your child’s needs, such as:
- Oral health exams and risk assessment
- Habit counseling for behaviors like pacifier use and thumb sucking
- Treatment for tooth decay and gum disease
- Preventative measures such as fluoride treatments
- Diagnosis and treatment of orthopedic irregularities
- Treatment for dental injuries, such as knocked out or fractured teeth
Your child’s first set of teeth typically start to bud at approximately six months of age, and most children will begin losing their baby teeth by age six or seven. These are then replaced by permanent teeth. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children receive a “well baby” dental exam when the first tooth appears or at least by age one, and then regular checkups every six months going forward.
